Malthouse Theatre and Instant Café Theatre Company

present

Alias Grace
by MARGARET ATWOOD
Winner of the Booker Prize

Adapted for the stage and directed by
Laurence Strangio

This July, in conjunction with My.Oz, the Australian High Commission’s year-long cultural programme to celebrate 50 years of relations between Malaysia and Australia, the Instant Cafe Theatre Company presents Alias Grace, an award winning theatre production from one of Melbourne’s most prestigious theatre companies, Malthouse Theatre. The play, adapted for the stage from Booker Prize winner Margaret Atwood’s novel, has been performed in Australia to critical acclaim, winning the 2005 Green Room Award for Best Performer and Best Lighting Design as well as a nomination for Best Director. (The Green Room Award is Australia’s most prestigious theatre arts award).

Synopsis
In 1844, 16-year-old Grace Marks is convicted of the brutal murder of her employer and his pregnant mistress. Eight years later, she is offered the chance to redeem herself – but telling a story is never an innocent act. In her brilliant portrayal of the celebrated murderess in the play Alias Grace, award-winning Australian actress Caroline Lee
transforms into Grace Marks in a performance as intimate as it is dangerous. The character is based on the real-life Grace Marks, one of the most notorious Canadian women of the 1840s.
